Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Story by: Abby Boothe ‘21

Our Lady of Guadalupe will be celebrated on December 12th. Señora Spets’ Spanish 3 and 4 classes will be singing Spanish songs with the help of the choir teacher Mrs. Nina Powers. The students in this class have already begun making rosary bracelets for each student and staff member at the school. Along with praying the rosary in Spanish and singing songs, there will also be a reenactment of Mary and Juan Diego. “We’ve have always celebrated it and done a reenactment but this year we will be doing that along with other things.” said Campus Minister Mrs. Teresa Kruschke.

The story of Juan Diego and Mary begins with him having a vision on his way to mass of a woman wearing a traditional Aztec dress and she is pregnant.  Mary told Juan Diego to tell the bishop to build a church in her honor. When Juan told the bishop, the bishop didn’t believe him so he gathered roses from the spot where he saw her. When he dropped the roses on the floor to show the bishop, a picture of Mary appears on his tilma.
